The Maati Centre - Wildlife

The Maati Centre is a unit of Colors of India located in Guwahati, Assam. Its main aim is to create a platform in the area for better exposure and knowledge sharing in the field of art and craft. This Guwahati based Maati Centre provides a great platform for handicrafts and arts from the North East to bloom.

This place highly enables artists to share their insights and crafts through a range of initiatives and events. The Maati centre is a place which is an amalgamation of art and craft along with traditions and cultures that gives shape to an initiative of social change and transformation in the society.

Furthermore, different events, exhibitions and storytelling sessions make this place even more profitable to survive in the contemporary world which brings positive experiences. The Maati Centre which is a social venture is run by a sweet married couple whose names are Rishi Raj Sarmah and Pabitra Lama Sarmah.

This place is basically a platform for artists to share their stories along with selling their handicrafts. The couple started their journey almost nine years back as both the husband and wife were interested in travelling to villages across India. This is why they started visiting numerous NGOs and small groups which used to be engaged in developing a sustainable income via selling handmade items.

They both had wished to create a platform in order to support unconventional art and culture from the region and they had even conducted a small survey in the year 2014 where they had met a few independent artists and entrepreneurs. This very activity gave rise to the development of the Maati Centre in the year 2017 in February. Maati Center was planned to be known as a social enterprise that not only sells handicrafts but also prove to be a platform or a medium to tell stories.

This initiative is the first of its kind in the entire region of Northeast India. It has revolutionized the art scenario in this part of the country. Besides promoting young artists, the centre also promotes organic farmers from different parts of the Northeast India.Aagor is a very famous NGO and is part of the Maati Centre. It has expansively worked to promote the handloom culture, while working for the rights of the poor craftsmen. The kinds of handloom products include kurtis, bed and cushion covers.

Antarkranti is also found in the Maati centre which is known to be made by the prisoners of Central Jail in Tihar. Antarkranti is again a NGO where one can find a wide range of candles and agarbattis which are all made by the inmates of the Central Jail only.Roohi is another social enterprise which is fervently working with traditional textiles and crafts and helping empower weavers and artisans of Haflong.

Haflong is a beautiful hill station in Assam. The Maati Centre which is crafted to give a new shape to women empowerment has an amazing compilation of handmade earrings made of paper and woolen materials. The Maati Centre is also spacious enough to make possible book readings, poetry and storytelling sessions.
