Boat cruise is considered to be one of the best modes to wander in the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or National Park to explore the wildlife from a close distance and to the fullest.The boating activity in Thekkady is organised by the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) in the Periyar Lake which is believed to be one of the most famous tourist spots in the entire area. This popular lake was created by the Mullaperiyar Dam which was built in the year 1895. The adjoining regions of the lake are quite frequently visited by the wild species that exist there. The most common wild species that you will find is the Elephant which you will be able to spot on the shoreline of the reservoir.Besides finding Elephants, there are also some other wild species like the Wild Boar and Sambar Deer which you might possibly sight. The upper deck portion of the boat is considered best for viewing the entire wildlife.

The tickets for boating are issued at the boating point in Thekkady which is 4.5 kilometers from the Kumily Bus Stand. Elephant Rides

These Elephant rides are arranged by the Elephant Junction. This park is located at a distance of 4 kilometers away from the Kumily Bus Stand and provides a rare cum adventurous chance to explore the safari on the back of an Elephant while passing through various spice plantations. The gentle breeze combined with the spice scented air flowing near the spice plantations will literally refresh you. Elephant Junction is the place that will actually allow you to intermingle with the elephants by indulging in activities such as elephant bathing, elephant rides and enjoying playing around with mischievous elephants.

Elephant safaris comprise of a howdah on the back of the elephants which can cater to two tourists at a single time along with an umbrella which sits over the riders head. You will be all the time accompanied by the Elephant trainers who will be walking at the side along with the elephant.
